  • NEW REPS Induction - Part 1
    Duration: 3 Consecutive Days / 3 Days - 1 day per week

    Course Description:

    This course is for all reps who have not yet attended any training for their role. It brings new reps together to focus on the skills they need, how the union works and the wider team they can call on. Key skills such as working with members, note taking, union structures, key legislation and company policies are all covered.

  • WORKPLACE REPS - Stage 1 (Module 1A & Module 1B)
    Duration: 5 Days - 1 day per week

    Course Description:
    This course is designed to be the core initial training for Unite Workplace Reps.

    The course covers the wide range of knowledge and skills needed by the new Rep including:

    • Key skills for organising your workplace
    • Handling discipline and grievance cases
    • Communication skills
    • Introduction to Employment Law Equality at Work
    • Evaluating and assessing your experience since the Stage 1 course
    • Understanding the concept of ‘good work’
    • Understanding and dealing with Issues around Dignity and Respect in the workplace
    • Problem solving skills
    • Bargaining skills
    • Work-life balance
    • Building a strong workplace union
  • WORKPLACE REPS - Part 2
    Duration: 3 Consecutive Days / 3 Days - 1 day per week


    Course Description:

    Building on the skills developed in New Reps Induction - Part 1 you will focus on handling members problems, dealing with grievance and disciplinary matters and developing negotiating strategies.

    Duration: 3 Consecutive Days / 3 Days - 1 day per week


    Course Description:

    Exploring Workplace Rights, Collective Bargaining, updating your agreements when laws change, making the case for Collective Agreements and local bargaining

  • WORKPLACE REPS - Part 4
    Duration: 3 Consecutive Days / 3 Days - 1 day per week


    Course Description:

    Pulling together the skills from previous courses to improving confidence and knowledge in exploring, questioning, and using employment law, developing the ability to find out how legal provisions impact on your member's rights in the workplace, how changes to employment law impact your workplace rights. Planning alternative solutions other than employment law to your workplace issues

  • HEALTH & SAFETY REPS - Stage 1 (Module 1A & Module 1B)
    Duration: 10 Days - 1 day per week

    Course Description:
    This course is the essential course for all new Unite Health & Safety Representatives.

    It is designed to help you build the skills, knowledge and confidence to organise effectively in order to carry out your work as a Safety Rep as well as to create understanding of how economic and other aspects affect the working lives, health, safety and welfare of working people.

    The course covers:

    • Understanding the role of a Unite Safety Rep
    • The legal framework of Health and Safety
    • Rights of Safety Reps
    • Involving the members in Health and Safety
    • Accident Investigations – Risk Assessments
    • Examining your workplace risk assessment and evaluating them
    • Understanding health & safety audits and company accident statistics|
    • Appreciate health & safety legislation including aspects of criminal and civil law
  • HEALTH & SAFETY REPS - Part 2
    Duration: 3 Consecutive Days / 3 Days - 1 day per week


    Course Description:

    Building on the skills developed in New Reps Induction - Part 1 you will focus on the legal framework of Health and Safety, the rights of Safety Reps, how to involve the members in Health and Safety.  Explore Accident Investigations.

  • HEALTH & SAFETY REPS - Part 3
    Duration: 3 Consecutive Days / 3 Days - 1 day per week


    Course Description:

    In this course you will look at the assessment of workplace action plans, develop an understanding of COSHH and related hazards, look at how to carry out a workplace audits.

  • HEALTH & SAFETY REPS - Part 4
    Duration: 3 Consecutive Days / 3 Days - 1 day per week

    Course Description:

    Developing further your understanding of specific types of risk including manual handing and ergonomic risks, creating a healthier work environment, understanding accidents and finding the route cause. Develop Investigation techniques and how to Manage risks and incidents.

  • EQUALITY & DIVERSITY
    Duration: 5 Consecutive Days / 5 Days - 1 day per week


    Course Description:

    Designed to give all Unite Reps the confidence and knowledge to address equality and diversity issues, the course provides a comprehensive overview of equality in the workplace. On completion of the course Reps should be able to:

    • Recognise equality issues within the workplace
    • Know what constitutes discrimination, harassment and bullying
    • Challenge their perception of equality & diversity
    • Understand the key points of new equalities legislation, measures and legal decisions
    • Decide how best to support workers in response to new equalities legislation
    • Use interviewing techniques to deal with individual and workplace equality issues
    • Develop equality policies and practice
  • BRANCH ADMINISTRATION
    Duration: 2 Consecutive Days / 2 Days - 1 day per week


    Course Description:

    The concept of this course is to develop Branch officials within Unite by providing them with the knowledge and skills, and nurturing their passion, to drive forward the ideology of our union, to develop our activist base and grow and strengthen our membership. This course is designed for all new Branch Officials.

    The course covers:

    • The administrative role of the Branch
    • How the union works
    • How ‘lay democracy’ starts at local branch level
    • Promoting equality issues within the branch
    • Encouraging active participation within the Unite structure
    • Chairing and Organising Skills
    • Setting out a local ‘strategy for growth’ for recruitment, retention and participation in branch life

      All course bookings will be made on a ‘first come first served basis’. Before applying for a course please ensure that your Regional Officer has been notified of your election/union position as this helps to alleviate any problems which may delay your application. Once we have received your application form we will confirm in writing whether or not you have been allocated a course place. It is up to you to secure your paid release. Employment legislation entitles you to payment of wages etc. for training you undertake that is connected with your trade union ‘duties’ (negotiating, representing people etc.), however, if you have been told by your employer that you will not receive paid release, you must raise the issue with your regional officer before you attend the course. Unite Education is not responsible for obtaining your paid release.
