    PLEASE NOTE - The General Secretary announced on the 4th December 2025 an extension to the DriverCare scheme. This is a pilot scheme, reviewed every 3 months. Members can now be covered for Loss of Licence up to the age of 68. For more information on these changes to the DriverCare Scheme please contact drivercare@unitetheunion.org 

    If you are aged between 62 to 68 you will be automatically enrolled into the pilot scheme. Please note as a new joiner to the DriverCare Scheme the loss of licence benefit of £3,000 will be included.

    Cover commences on the date on which a completed application form is received by the DriverCare Administration Unit and the first subscription is paid to the DriverCare Scheme.

    It is important to understand this scheme will not provide loss of licence benefit in respect of a pre-existing medical condition or any condition that arises within 39 weeks of joining.

    Pre-Existing Condition: relates to any physical or mental defect, infirmity, medical condition or chronic recurring illness which you could reasonably be expected to know existed at the date of entry into the Scheme and which might lead to the relevant Licensing Authority revoking or refusing to renew your professional licence.

  • "Loss of Licence Benefit will cease on reaching your 68th birthday (Standard DriverCare covers Loss of Licence up to the age of 62 and during the pilot scheme this will be extended up to the age of 68).

  • It is important to register all licence categories that you wish to be covered. Please choose the level of cover which best suits your needs. Cover is £1.10 per week if you are aged under 68 and 65p per week if you are aged 68 and over, except where indicated. If in doubt please contact the DriverCare Administration Unit on 01708 339046.

    OPTIONAL EXTRAS - Only available to those who have opted for Loss of Licence Cover

    Supplementary Loss of Licence Cover (Top-Up) – up to £15,000
    Available up to the age of 68. This provides an additional lump-sum cash benefit up to £15,000 in the event that your licence is revoked or refused by the licensing authority for medical reasons.

  • Wage Support Payment - up to a maximum of £15,600.

    This provides an additional benefit following a successful Loss of Licence claim
    where the member suffers a reduction in gross taxable pay in excess of 25%.

Depending on how you choose to pay your normal Unite membership subs, your bank or employer will be notified of the increase to your subscription rate. Any new contact or employment details will be used to update on your membership record and communicate with you. We will contact you regarding items specific to being a member of Unite the Union, including activities, campaigns and benefits, including DriverCare.
