  • Branch secretary & Branch Officials Course- 

    The Branch Official is a key player in the Unite team. The concept of
    this course is to develop the branch committee roles within Unite by
    providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills, and nurturing
    their passion to drive forward the ideology of our union, to develop our
    activist base and grow and strengthen our membership. This course
    is designed for all new Branch Officials, and for those who have not
    attended training recently.

  • Equality & Diversity Course- 

    Course description:
    Designed to give all Unite Reps the confidence and knowledge
    to address equality and diversity issues, the course provides a
    comprehensive overview of equality in the workplace. On completion
    of the course Reps should be able to:
    • Recognise equality issues within the workplace
    • Know what constitutes discrimination, harassment and bullying
    • Challenge their perception of equality & diversity
    • Understand the key points of new equalities legislation, measures
       and legal decisions
    • Decide how best to support workers in response to new
       equalities legislation
    • Use interviewing techniques to deal with individual and
    workplace equality issues
    • Develop equality policies and practice

  • Legal training day - reps event- 

    The Legal Updates are an event, taking place in Unite Offices, is a comprehensive one-day programme designed to provide reps with the latest developments in employment law, equality, education, and legal services. Bringing together subject matter experts and key organisations, the event offers valuable insights into current legal issues affecting workplaces and members.

     

  • Mental Health Stress Awareness- 

    This course is designed to help representatives develop a stronger understanding of mental health issues and how they can impact members in the workplace. It explores the challenges individuals may face and the role that reps can play in providing effective support.

    Participants will gain knowledge of Disability Discrimination Law, with a particular focus on how it applies to individuals experiencing mental health conditions. This will enable reps to better identify when discrimination may be occurring and understand the legal protections available.

    The training also equips attendees with the tools to develop practical strategies for addressing mental health issues at work. By the end of the course, reps will be better prepared to promote fair treatment, support wellbeing, and help ensure that employees are not disadvantaged or discriminated against due to mental health conditions.

     

  • Neurodiversity 5 day Course- 

    This course explores the concept of neurodiversity and how a range of neurological differences can affect members in the workplace. It is designed to equip union representatives with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to raise awareness, support neurodivergent individuals, and advocate for more inclusive workplace practices.

    Participants will develop a clear understanding of neurodiversity, including conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences. The course examines the societal and workplace barriers that neurodivergent individuals may face, as well as the support mechanisms currently available.

    A key focus is on understanding how workplace practices can unintentionally disadvantage neurodivergent employees, including why they may be more vulnerable to disciplinary action. Through real-life case studies, attendees will apply their learning to practical scenarios and identify ways to improve workplace approaches to stress, mental health, and inclusion.

    The training also looks at how to build effective trade union teams, ensuring a balanced mix of skills with organising at the core, to better support members and campaign for improved policies.

    By the end of the course, reps will be better equipped to promote inclusive workplaces, challenge barriers, and support neurodivergent members effectively.

     

  • Effective Communication Course: Choose your preferred session:
  • Effective Communication Course- 

    This course is designed to build your confidence and ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings, including meetings, negotiations, and day-to-day interactions with colleagues. Strong communication is essential for successful workplace relationships, but it can often be affected by barriers that disrupt the clear exchange of information.

    Participants will explore the different internal and external barriers to communication and learn how these can impact understanding and collaboration. The course also highlights the importance of body language, helping you to interpret non-verbal cues and better understand others’ thoughts, feelings, and intentions.

    In addition, the training examines the wider role of communication in modern workplaces, including the influence of new media, podcasts, and advertising, and how messages are shaped to engage audiences. Practical guidance will be provided on creating clear and impactful communications, including how to craft compelling newsletters.

    By the end of the course, attendees will have a stronger understanding of effective communication techniques and the confidence to apply these skills in professional and representative roles.

     

  • Pensions Stage 1- 

    This course is designed to provide representatives with a clear understanding of the full range of pension schemes they are likely to encounter in the workplace. It covers key areas including state pensions, workplace pension schemes, auto-enrolment, pension protections, and the role of the Pensions Ombudsman.

    Participants will develop their knowledge of how different pension arrangements work and the responsibilities employers have in supporting employees’ retirement savings. The course also explores current pension regulations and protections, helping reps identify and address potential issues affecting members.

    A core aim of the training is to build confidence in discussing pensions within a workplace context. Reps will gain the skills needed to support and advise members effectively, as well as to engage with pensions as part of the collective bargaining process.

    By the end of the course, attendees will feel more confident in navigating pension-related matters and better equipped to advocate for fair and secure retirement outcomes for their members.

     

  • Bus Scheduling Course- 

    This course is designed to equip bus schedule representatives with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to effectively negotiate improvements in working conditions and organise around key workplace issues.

    Participants will develop an understanding of the various terms and conditions that impact bus workers, alongside gaining a clearer insight into the role and responsibilities of a schedule representative. The course explores practical challenges, such as issues arising from the introduction of new routes, and provides hands-on experience in constructing timetables and managing driving blocks.

    Attendees will learn how to interpret and analyse operational data, including flat line graphs, duty compilations, roster formulas, and rest day patterns, and how to translate this information into workable schedules. The course also introduces the basics of schedule costing, helping reps to better understand the financial implications of proposed changes.

    In addition, the training covers the legal framework and relevant union policies, ensuring reps are well-informed when representing members. A strong focus is placed on developing and implementing strategies to improve health and safety culture within the workplace.

    By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to negotiate effectively, support colleagues, and help drive positive change in bus scheduling and working conditions.

  • AI: Threat or Opportunity 1 day Course - 

    This one-day course explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming workplaces, society, and trade union organising. It is designed to equip Unite representatives, members, and the wider community with the knowledge and confidence to understand AI’s impact and respond effectively.

    Participants will be introduced to the history and core concepts of AI, building a foundation for understanding how these technologies are shaping modern working environments. The course also examines the relationship between AI and equality, exploring who benefits, who may be disadvantaged, and how existing inequalities can be either reinforced or challenged.

    A key focus is on the broader social and political implications of AI, including its role in social media, the spread of information, and its influence on public discourse and movements. Attendees will consider how these developments affect workers and communities.

    The course also provides practical insight into organising around AI, helping reps to develop strategies for using technology responsibly, protecting members’ interests, and strengthening union power in a rapidly changing landscape. Throughout the day, participants will share experiences, learn from one another, and build networks.

    By the end of the course, attendees will have a clearer understanding of AI, its implications, and how to advocate for fairness, equality, and worker protection in an AI-driven world.

  • Addiction Awareness and Support Course 3 days - 

    This three-day course is designed to build awareness and understanding of addiction and its impact in the workplace. It provides representatives and activists with the knowledge and confidence to recognise issues, offer support, and promote fair and compassionate workplace practices.

    The course explores a range of addictions, including gambling and substance misuse, helping participants to identify the common signs and behaviours associated with addiction. It also highlights the support systems and resources available, enabling reps to better assist colleagues who may be experiencing these challenges.

    A key focus of the training is on the role of workplace representatives in advocating for improved terms and conditions, ensuring that employees facing addiction are treated with dignity and receive appropriate support. Participants will discuss practical approaches to addressing these issues within workplace policies and culture.

    By the end of the course, attendees will feel more confident in identifying concerns, supporting colleagues, and campaigning for stronger workplace support systems, helping to create safer and more understanding working environments.

     

  • Organising Course 1 day Choose your preferred session
  • Organising Course 1 day - 

    This course introduces the principles of the organising approach to trade unionism, focusing on how workers can build collective power to improve workplace conditions. Participants will explore the difference between servicing and organising models, examine how collective action creates stronger and more sustainable outcomes, and discuss the importance of engaging members in workplace campaigns.

    Through interactive discussions and practical workplace scenarios, learners will develop an understanding of how to identify workplace issues, build participation, develop workplace leaders, and plan campaigns that not only achieve immediate improvements but also strengthen union organisation for the future.

      All course bookings will be made on a ‘first come first served basis’. Before applying for a course please ensure that your Regional Officer has been notified of your election/union position as this helps to alleviate any problems which may delay your application. Once we have received your application form we will confirm in writing whether or not you have been allocated a course place. It is up to you to secure your paid release. Employment legislation entitles you to payment of wages etc. for training you undertake that is connected with your trade union ‘duties’ (negotiating, representing people etc.), however, if you have been told by your employer that you will not receive paid release, you must raise the issue with your regional officer before you attend the course. Unite Education is not responsible for obtaining your paid release.
