• How long will personal data be processed
We will keep your personal data only for the period necessary to enable us to fulfil the purpose(s) for which we collected it and/or whilst we maintain a legitimate interest in retaining it.
Information provided regarding your employer, workplace, job title and equality information will be used to update your membership record and retained for the duration of your membership (subject to any later changes) and for a reasonable period after membership end.
All opinion and experience survey data will be retained for up to 5 years.
• What type of personal data will be collected and used
The survey will check we hold the correct information for:-
> Your employer
> Your workplace
> Your role (Job Title)
Your country of residence is mandatory data; all other information is optional.
The survey will ask for information concerning your industrial, political and trade union experience and opinions.
The surveys asks for equality monitoring information.
If you express an interest in further contact regarding certain initiatives, we will ask you to confirm your email address and phone number.
• What special categories of personal data will be collected and used
Special category information revealing or concerning your trade union membership, ethnicity, health, sexual orientation and/or political opinions may be collected in this survey.
Information revealing your trade union membership will be collected when you complete the Unite all member survey, as being a responder to this reveals you are a trade union member.
Information concerning your ethnicity, health (whether you consider yourself to be disabled) and your sexual orientation (whether you are LGBT+) will be collected (if provided by you) and used to update your membership record for equality monitoring purposes and statistical analysis of opinion and experience responses.
Information concerning/revealing your political opinions will be collected (if provided by you) and used for statistical analysis of our members’ opinions, experience and trends and to shape the union’s campaigns, strategies and/or policies.
• Legal basis for processing your personal data
Legitimate interest/trade union aims and/or legal obligation.
Information provided regarding your employer, workplace and job title will be used to update your membership record (we are legally required to keep membership details up-to-date).
Equality information will be used to update your membership record for equality monitoring purposes and for statistical/trend analysis of opinion and experience survey data. Unite campaigns for equality for all and we use equality monitoring data to support campaigns and ensure that women, BAEM, disabled and LGBT+ members are full represented within the union.
All other experience and opinion personal information will be used to allow us to understand our membership, improve our campaigns and have a greater impact on decision makers. We will collate the survey responses across the union and use this to analyse and report on trends and attitudes within our membership. We may also use the content to support briefings to members, MPs and experts, media coverage, and/or on social media.
• Who will have access to your personal data
The Research Department will have access to and control of your individual survey response data.
Unite will not disclose any of your personally identifiable information to any third party unless they are processing data on the union’s behalf and we have contractual, technical, organisational and security measures in place to protect members’ data.
• Your individual rights
Respondents to the survey have the right to access the information provided in this survey and (in certain circumstances) you may have the right to have your information deleted. You can make a request to access or erase your survey data by contacting Unite’s Data Protection Team using the email or postal address below.
